"THE GREEN SASH" BY THE LATE KEVIN SCOTT

From 1994 to 2007 Mr Kevin Scott produced 52 editions a quarterly newsletter he named "The Green Sash". This newsletter covered the history and the Brothers of the inner-city schools of Sydney (Redfern, Forest Lodge, and Waterloo) from Redfern's beginning in 1886 to the closure of Forest Lodge in 1967. There are also many references to the Brothers and their schools in country New South Wales. The newsletter ceased with Kevin's death in October 2007.

For his monumental contribution to the Patrician Congregation, Kevin and his wife Rhonda, were welcomed in the Congregation as Affiliate members.

This video (click) was taken in 2004. In it Kevin gives some background to his writing of the newsletter.

A comprehensive overview of the "Green Sash" is available on the Patrician Brothers website (click)

Alumni members requests

We have had two of our alumni wanting to draw items to our attention.

Firstly from Terry McDonald who went to the Christian Brothers High School Lewisham after he completed the intermediate at St James. After congratulating us on the recent reunion Terry says:
"Lewisham CBHS is having a 50th reunion next year for our class, of whom 4 went on to 'Lewo' from Forest Lodge. Dennis Danaher, (Was it his brother I saw in the distance? ), Sammy Ierace....are the whereabouts of these two known?"
If you have any information email Terry (click) or phone 0298101873

Secondly from Les Miller, who also congratulated us on the reunion luncheon, is making enquiries for someone who is in "friends united" an online school friends communication source. Les says:
"Christine Finch (now Pruden) was in class between 1960-62 at St James. I met her on Friends Reunited. She is in England now and wants to get in touch with some classmates. She is at the front ,centre with long sleeves. She said the Good Samaritan teacher is Sister Catherine Henry."
If you have any information email Les (click)

WOW! What a reunion!!

G'day Everyone,

I better get something up on the blog. I'll review this 'draft' later

We were proud to have Brother Aengus Kavanagh, Patrician Bothers Provincial of the Australian and Papua New Guinea province, attend our reunion. Brother Aengus was accompanied by a contingent of Patrician Brothers. Brother Aengus opened proceedings with grace. My other committee members Paul Blair and Alan Ruff spoke briefly to us about our Alumni. I'm sure everyone enjoyed our new venue; it was plush, the meal was great (want seconds?... there is still more) and the buzz of reminiscences.

There were some new faces. Names coming to mind include were Terry Danaher (he came all the way from Casino) Terry McDonald, Noel Pye, John Howard and Roma Agius (nee Waldron) from St James girls.

We of course had the presence of the usual attendees like Brian Coleman, Pauline Stanfield (nee Ruff), Joan Casey (nee McGlynn) and Patricia Harris (nee Beaven) were smilling faces. There was Kevin Hilferty who ducked off before Pat Doyle could say hello to him. The Eves contingent: Jim, Margaret, Sadie and Imelda. Bill Stenning wanted to speak to Peter Evans (apology) but that will have to wait till next time. Bill's sisters were there too

We had a few Peters there. There was Brother Peter, Peter O'Grady, Peter Rowswell and Peter Schultz.

A couple of famous old boys too. There was Brother Patrick Lovegrove, a St James boy celebrating 60 years of his profession as a Patrician Brother. Clem Kennedy who left Mount Carmel 70 years ago. You will remember Clem,he played half back for Australia in 1946. And how about this, Paddy Basic who left school in 1932. Paddy takes the honour of being our earliest Patrician Brothers school boy.

The Redfern, St Vincent's stalwarts Len and Les Miller were there as usual. Incidentally, Les is the only member of the Alumni to put his name as a follower on the blog. He has that image of the "Lone Avenger". Bernadette Farrugia (nee Griffiths) although representing some of the St Vincents boys went to school at St Bernard's Mascot.

Did we have a school song? I didn't think so. I wonder what is being sung by these two old boys?

So another year over and also another reunion luncheon. A great day was had by all. Looking forward to next time.
